Experience and Knowledge required
Drs. Direct has high calibre nurses capable of taking on a high level of responsibility within different organisations. They have two years' professional experience post training.
Nurses are registered before applying for occupational health nursing posts. Their past experience may include work in an accident and emergency setting or practice nursing. They will be up to date with current and relevant legislation, management of sickness, development of manual handling policies and rehabilitation of staff with chronic conditions. Many have been involved in local initiatives, such as risk assessment, to add to their experience.

Responsibilities
Occupational health nurses are responsible for the health and well being of employees in the work place in conjunction with the employer. Their work is delivered in accordance with the various laws and regulations that govern the safety of employees and their working environment.
Typical work activities will include:
- Assessing work environments for health and safety problems;
- Delivering initiatives, policies and procedures on health education and promotion and prevention of accidents or diseases;
- Conducting assessments and inspections, in conjunction with regulations, such as display screen equipment (DSE), personal protective equipment (PPE) and the control of substances hazardous to health (COSHH);
- Delivering training in health and safety;
- Providing first aid and medical treatment;
- Communicating with managers on health and safety issues;
- Keeping employee health records and preparing accident reports;
- Conducting accident investigations;
- Providing pre-employment medicals, including hearing and vision screening, and health and fitness advice;
- Assisting employees return to work after medical leave;
- Monitoring employee exposure to hazardous chemicals;
- Contacting doctors and hospitals, to arrange further treatment;
- Using personal expertise to ensure organisations meet legislative requirements.
